Works Minister Announce Toll Increase, PM said Hold On!

Many of people at the moment forget and don't care anymore about current oil pricing. Since the government dropped the price down to RM1.80/liter, everybody looks happy and comfortable with it. Good. Satisfying with the price is not wrong; I did too, but all i ask is don't be ignorant (katak bawah tempurung). We all must know the latest news and keep updated. The oil price is now at USD38/barrel and roughly we actually deserve to get cheaper than RM1.80/liter. I don't want to talk more about the issue. The main issue is as follows.

KUALA LUMPUR: Road users will have to pay higher tolls for five major highways beginning March 1. The highways affected are the North-South Expressway (PLUS), Sprint/Kerinchi/Damansara Link highways, Ampang-Kuala Lumpur Expressway (AKLEH), Sungai Besi Highway and the New Pantai Expressway (NPE). For the PLUS highway, it will be an increase of 5%. This means toll charges from Bukit Kayu Hitam in Kedah to Kempas in Johor would increase from RM108 to RM113.40.

A trip from Kuala Lumpur to Ipoh would increase from RM26.50 to RM27.90. For the Sprint/Kerinchi/Damansara Link highways, it will be an increase of between 30sen and 50sen. The Sungai Besi Highway will see an increase of 10sen, while the AKLEH and NPE will be increased by 50sen and 40sen respectively. In announcing this, Works Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Zin Mohammed said the increase was minimal and hoped the public understood that the increase was stipulated in the concession agreements that the government had signed.

Everything is increased. The increase that affect my life significantly is the increase of Sungai Besi Highway by 10sen because everyday I'll use the road to work. 10sen x 2 x 23 working days = RM4.60. Not too bad. RM4.60 x 12 = RM55.20 per year. Wahh..hmm but not too bad either..

“The increase was actually due in January last year but we had postponed it until now. This means the government has been paying compensation for 14 months.”

Mohd Zin said the compensation amounted to RM277mil with RM177mil going to PLUS, RM38mil to Sprint and RM30mil to AKLEH, adding that the impending increase was half of what was scheduled.

“There is a shortfall of 5%,” he said during a press conference at the Works Ministry on Wednesday.

The announcement for the increase however comes almost immediately after two toll booths were abolished recently. The Salak Jaya toll (south-bound) was abolished on Tuesday while the toll at PJS2 (Kuala Lumpur-bound) of the New Pantai Expressway was abolished on Feb 13. Mohd Zin said the abolishments were unrelated to the toll increase and that it should not be politicised, stressing that it was a contractual obligation on the government’s part.

He said more importantly was that alternative routes existed for all highways in the country, adding that this was the case for all highways but added that more could be done to improve the alternative routes.
When pointed out that the roads were jammed especially in the city regardless of whether it was a highway or an alternative route, Mohd Zin said it was a big challenge having to manage the amount of traffic Kuala Lumpur has.

“Kuala Lumpur has 3.5 million vehicles for a population of about five million people.

"Tokyo only has 1.3 million vehicles for a population of 20 million,” Mohd Zin said, concluding that more effort was needed to improve public transport.

The consession agreement between government with those toll parties is indeed an unfair. How come the government can agree on such thing in the first place? Let me give you an example. Me is government and you is toll company. 1) Every month you will get profits of RM5. If u got less, I'll pay you the shorts. You agree. 2) But if you get profits more than RM5, lets split the profits. You dont agree. For some reason, both agree with condition 1 only. What??!! Ok the funny thing is a PM reply from Pataya (suddenly I feel like want to eat Nasi Goreng Pataya lah).

PATTAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi wants the decision to
increase toll rates on five highways, which was announced earlier Thursday morning, to be reconsidered. He said the matter will be discussed in the Cabinet meeting Friday, which will be chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

The Prime Minister is here to attend the Asean Defence Minister’s Meeting. On Friday, he will attend the Asean Summit in Hua Hin Friday. Abdullah said the decision to increase the toll rates on March 1, which was announced by Works Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Zin Mohammed, was made three weeks ago.

”However, the situation has now changed, and the economy has not become better as yet, which was why we recently decided to introduce the second stimulus package or the mini-budget. People are having difficulties. The situation is not right for a toll hike. I felt that this matter needed to be discussed again in the Cabinet. The decision may come in the form of measures that will included in the second stimulus package or through some other measures. I think that’s the best we can do - do a review and decide on whatever that is appropriate,” he told reporters.

Abdullah said the people should understand that the toll increase was connected to the highway concession agreements made between the Government and the concessionaires, in which major roads were be constructed by private initiatives through toll collections. Asked whether the imposition of the new toll rates would be postponed, Abdullah said the people cannot accept the increase now.

”The new rates were to begin on March 1. It has not been implemented yet. So, there’s still time, and the Cabinet will have to make another report on the matter. The technical issues will be handled by the Finance Minister,” he added.

1. Proton Holdings Bhd. has announced that the new Proton MPV will be named as Proton Exora. While the Proton Exora order could be done starting this Saturday (21/2/2009), Proton Exora will be launched soon. The winner of the Proton Exora name contest will be rewarded with the new Proton Exora during the launce time.

2. As speculated before, the new Proton MPV Exora will have price that goes under RM80000. So check your savings account and go order it now before too late. Good Job Proton!

P/S: The Proton development team is currently at Spain, together with MIROS Crash Safety Engineering (CRASE) unit to test the possibility for Proton Exora to install curtain airbag for rear seat passengers. This is important as the new Proton MPV Exora will be later used massly in government ministries and agensies.

The Camaro is to return in 2009 however as a retro styled sports coupe.
The fourth-gen Camaro would last up through the 2002 model year, at which point production was stopped due to slow sales.

Frogeye Sprite Austin Healey the first of several Sprite models.
The Austin Healey Sprite which was introduced in 1958 was a diminutive roadster with an unmistakable headlight arrangement.
The prominent headlights were initially intended to be flip-up units. However the cost of retractable headlights was to high, and instead they were fixed in what would have been the 'up' position. Their unusual location gave rise to the cars affectionate nickname, the "Frogeye" Sprite.
The Austin Healey Sprite MK I was powered by a 1.0 litre, inline, four cylinder engine which developed a grand total of 43 horsepower. Coupled to a four speed manual gearbox it was capable of propelling the car up to 84 mph.
The Frogeye Sprite (which was discontinued in 1961) was the first of several Sprite models. In 1962 the MK II Austin Healey Sprite was introduced. The MK II introduced several updates, the most noticeable of which was a more conventional headlight layout. From 1961 the Austin Healey Sprite was also sold as the MG Midget.

Disturbing Crashed Black Toyota Vios 2009 Photos

1. Above is the newly black Toyota Vios 2009 photo during the launching. Looks pretty cool huh. Have you wondered how the crashed Toyota Vios looks like? Last time I have submit some photos of Toyota Vios crashed onto a Palma Tree. This time, another newly black Toyota Vios hit the wired rope barrier and this accident claimed 3 lives. The accident happened at wee hours (4 am) and the driver suspected using a pill.

2. From this kind of crash, what we can learn is you should try avoid driving during wee hours as our body clocks are just not suitable to work optimally. Second, please wear your rear seatbelt. The rear seatbelts are there not just for the show. You must wear it for your own safety. Lastly, wired rope barrier might be hazardous to road users, so please be careful when driving on those highway stretch that using wired rope barrier (since no research has been done yet to justify this).

JPJ Agrees for Lorries to Carry Heavier Loads?

Haji Solah JPJJOHOR BARU: Lorries will be allowed to carry heavier loads under new guidelines being drawn up by the Government. Road Transport Department (JPJ) director-general Datuk Solah Mat Hassan said a decision on the new load was expected to be made by June and would cover lorry operators nationwide. Heh new guidelines being drawn? Who will do the job? Government? Nobody else except MIROS. so good luck MIROS!

He said the details were still being worked out by the Works Ministry, adding that it had agreed to new weight limits. Solah said the decision was being taken following requests by operators to be allowed to increase their load limit to international standards. Increasing the load means increasing the mass ratio between heavy vehicle and passenger vehicle. Increasing mass ratio means increasing chance of fatality during collision between those vehicles. Increasing fatalities means the reduction fatality vision of Malaysia is just a fatamorgana. Do people really think about this before initiate this kind of new guidelines?

They had pointed out that road conditions in the country had improved and vehicles were also better equipped to carry heavier loads, he told a press conference at the state JPJ office after a dialogue session with lorry operators here. Agree at some point but how come I still found 1960s lorry prime movers on the road?

“They have also told us about how the economic situation has affected their businesses,” he said, adding that lorry operators were hoping to lower their operating costs with the increased weight limit as they would be making fewer trips.

At present, international standards allow lorries to carry a maximum of 12 tonnes per axle, but in Malaysia, the limit is set at between eight and nine tonnes per axle. On a separate matter, Solah said the written test for those learning to drive would be simplified as many prospective drivers had found the test questions confusing. He said that while the content for the test would remain the same, the method of asking and answering the questions would be made simpler.

“Those who are illiterate and slow will also be able to drive soon as we will offer special tests for them from next month,” he said.

Meanwhile, Johor Lorry Operators Association president Leow Hock Tiap said he welcomed the move to increase the load limit for lorries. More work to be done. Huh.

The Austin Healey 3000 was the replacement car for the Austin Healey 100/6. The Austin Healey 3000 was a superior car to its predecessor, equipped with many improved features and updated parts. During its production lifetime the Austin Healey 3000 went through three different versions, the MK I, MK II and MK III.
The Austin Healey 3000 MK I (1959 - 1961) was fitted with a 3.0 litre inline six cylinder engine developing 124 horsepower. The engine was equipped with twin SU carburetors. And the car featured disc brakes at the front.
The Austin Healey 3000 MK II (1961 - 1963) introduced several improvements and design changes. The engine was enhanced by the fitment of triple SU carburettors which bumped the power up to 132 horsepower. In 1962 the BT7 2+2 version was introduced. This seating layout became the only option from 1962 onwards. The Austin Healey 3000 MK IIa introduced wind-up windows, a curved windscreen, and a convertible hood.

The Austin Healey 3000 MK III (1963 - 1967) was the final version of the 3000 model. The performance was improved due to engine modifications. Peak power was raised to 148 horsepower, giving the 3000 MK III a top speed of 120 mph. The brakes were also enhanced with the fitment of a servo.
In 1967, due to new safety regulations in the cars biggest market - America, the Austin Healey 3000 was discontinued. It's replacement, the MGC, was nowhere near as popular as the Austin Healey 3000.
During its lifetime the Austin Healey 3000 proved to be a capable racing car. And it competed successfully in rally and road races around the world.
